If you are being physically abused, sexually abused, or threatened by a family or household member, or you fear such abuse, you are the victim of domestic violence. This includes abuse or threats by your spouse, former spouse or any other household member who is or was living in the same household as you. The law also protects you from abuse by a person whom you have a child in common regardless if you are married or related to such individual. In addition, many domestic violence centers are available for help and, victim’s advocates are legally able to converse with you in strict confidence without disclosing information to a third party.

Domestic ViolenceTips

The Cycle Theory of Domestic Violence:

Tension Building Stage

  • Tension increases during arguments about money, work, children and daily activities. Name- calling, hostility and friction escalate.
  • Victims may try to control the abuse by various coping techniques such as avoidance, appeasing or “giving in”.

Acute Battering Incident

  • Physical battery can be caused by anything and is unpredictable.
  • Battery can start with pushing, hitting, and shoving, and may progress to more serious bodily harm, including murder.

Honeymoon Stage

  • Often batterers fear that their partners will leave them so they may apologize, promise to change, beg for forgiveness and vow to change their behavior.
  • Victims and batterers often minimize the seriousness of the injuries and the intensity of the abusive behavior.

Background Check:

If you fear you may be a victim of domestic violence prior to entering a relationship, it is strongly suggested that you contact a licensed private investigator for the purpose of conducting a background check. Unfortunately, unless a track record exists, security ultimately rests with your belief. However, a private investigator has the ability to conduct a covert investigation to confirm your suspicions.

Help:

  • Contact your local law enforcement agency.
