The internet is an important place for children to enhance their education, play, and safely communicate with others. But it also presents many challengers due to the anonymity that masks the users. Strict guidelines should be established to avoid pornography, encounters with sexual predators, hackers, and other users who exploit children and their personal information. It is important to have your child show you what sites they visit, understand the lingo, and the access they have, such as instant messaging, chat and or text communication. The computer should be located in a common area of the home enabling parents to monitor the child’s activity. Approved times should be established and safeguard options should be invoked, such as site blocking, filtering and monitoring. Most importantly, no personal information should be placed in a profile, all communications should be strictly limited to known friends, and NEVER meet with someone you don’t know.
