From time to time, we receive unsolicited e-mails, and or text messages regarding a stock tip. The contents of said message usually identifies a bulletin board stock or stocks of shell companies which are described to “explode” or “take off”. These stocks are usually trading at a very low value of about 10 cents per share. The purpose of this e-mail is to obviously encourage you to purchase this stock, leading you to believe you will make a substantial profit. If you are gullible, you will now perform your research and review some of the posting made on the internet related to the stock in question. You will now find substantial positive postings related to potential acquisitions, business strategy, and other misleading information which appears to be fact. This is called the “pump-and-dump” scheme. In essence, by disseminating false and misleading information this encourages individuals to purchase large numbers of this stock, thereby bringing the value to about $8.00 per share. This is called the pump, then comes the dump, when the players involved sell all their shares at the high price and crash the stock to no par value. You now lost your investment.
